State of the Media - Examining Audience Demographics

Nielsen's recent State of the Media: Advertising & Audiences Report provides a look at media usage by demographic. Scott Meador, Director of Predictive Analysis for Time Warner Cable, reviewed this report and below are some of his key takeaways.

Relating to Social Media and Cross-Platform viewing behavior trends, Nielsen found that women, overall, are significantly more likely to engage with social media than men. Per Nielsen’s Internet-usage index, key take-aways include:

  • Women are 18% more likely to follow a brand on Facebook or other social media sites; while men are 21% less likely.
  • Similarly, women are 8% more likely than the average online adult to build or update a personal blog — while men are 9% less likely to do so.
  • Women are 6% more likely to have created at least one social networking profile; and men 7% less likely.
  • Women are 12% more likely to have used the Internet to purchase a product featured on TV; while men are 14% less likely.

According to Meador, these gender discrepancies are noteworthy, because women are the more active gender when it comes to digital brands and online purchasing. Just as women tend to dominate with traditional brands and analog purchasing, the Nielsen findings suggest a digital affinity for women… that women aren’t just more likely to buy merchandise online; they are more likely to be online in the first place. Women are more likely to blog; they are more likely to be on Facebook / Twitter and they are more likely, in general, to be represented in the online world.
